Ways to get involved
Kallee Shipley and Emily Montgomery, Newton High School Seniors, volunteered their time to present the Kids on the Block puppet show to Jasper County, Iowa second grade students. Each year, Progress Industries invites second grade classes throughout Jasper County to tour Progress Industries, interact with Kids on the Block and participate in learning centers that teach children basic sign language, comprehension skills, the challenges people with dyslexia may experience and what it’s like to use a wheelchair for mobility.
Progress Industries has hosted these annual tours in Newton, Iowa for over 25 years. The goal is to create more accepting communities for people with disabilities to live and work. Teachers and parents comment about the curriculum associated with the tours that create a fun and interactive learning environment for the second grade students.
Viewing a Kids on the Block performance is an unforgettable educational experience. The "kids" vividly and effectively model relationships between people, both with and without disabilities, by using frank and often humorous communication of facts and feeling between the puppet characters and the audience. If you are interested in a presentation from the Kids on the Block, please contact Melissa Butler at Progress Industries for available program. 641-791-2846 or melissa.butler@progressindustries.org
